Something for Kate, Alex Lloyd, Coldplay

We remain outside the box for this week’s entry, and we also continue with the Australian theme from last year. What we have is another tape from Kathy, this one sent to me in late 2001. It consists of three live sets recorded from Triple J over the course of the summer (well summer in the UK, winter in Oz) of 2001, so let’s get to it!

Something for Kate – Live at the Wireless:
First up we have a set recorded by Something for Kate for Live at the Wireless (recorded on the 16th of July and first broadcast on the 30th of the same month). Something for Kate were actually a pretty big deal in Australia at the time, having just released their third album Echolalia a few weeks previously, which reached number two on the ARIA Albums chart. I don’t think I’d really heard anything by them before receiving this tape, but I do remember enjoying this and listening to it quite a bit at the time. We get live versions of 10 of the 13 album tracks, so it’s a pretty good representation of their then new material. My personal highlight listening back has so far been ‘Three Dimensions’, singer Paul Dempsey has also mentioned how he has been receiving irate emails from Psychology students over his pronunciation of ‘Echolalia’ – he pronounces it Echo-la-lia, whereas the correct pronunciation is apparently actually Echo-lay-lia. If you were wondering, it’s a speech disorder, characterised by the unsolicited repetition of vocalisations made by another person, so there you go! ‘Stunt Show’ is another one I’m enjoying, SfK are nothing ground-breaking, but it’s they make well-crafted melodic indie songs, Dempsey’s voice conveying emotion without sounding overly angsty. That one is followed by ‘Feeding the Birds and Hoping for Something in Return’ which is a great title for a song. The final single released from the album, ‘Say Something’ is a definite highlight here, although I’m not sure what the “I am a lighthouse” line is all about! The big hitters are definitely towards the end of the set, ‘Monsters’ is my favourite track so far. We end with’ Seasick’, which is a fine song, and a good choice to end on.

There’s no commercial release of this, however this YouTube channel has a couple of videos of performances from the show.

Alex Lloyd – Live at the Wireless:
We had a Live at the Wireless set from Alex on the last tape that Kathy sent me too, that one was from around the time of the release of his debut album Black the Sun, well this one is from around the time of the release of the follow up Watching Angels Mend. We open with ‘Everybody’s Laughing’ which is one of my favourites from the album, it’s an insistent little number and a real earworm, a great choice to start a set with. Next up is the first single taken from the album, ‘Downtown’ and it’s another good one. I really don’t listen to WAM enough, it’s a great album. The hits keep on coming, as that is followed by ‘Green’, a tale of love and how Alex can be anyone but the friend of the subject of the song, as it would be too painful. ‘My Friend’ is an upbeat toe tapper, the most rocking song so far definitely. Next, we have ‘Bus Ride’ which, whilst far from a bad song, is a noticeable step down from the previous tracks for me, a subtle and thoughtful song for sure, but it doesn’t quite do it for me in the way the other tracks have so far. That’s followed by a track from Black the Sun, ‘My Way Home’, not a particular favourite of mine, but I’m enjoying hearing it here. The final track is perhaps his best known one, ‘Amazing’. Number 1 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 for 2001, it’s a fantastic song, the lyrics are excellent, and it’s another catchy one that ends up stuck in your head upon hearing.

Coldplay – Live in Sydney 2001:
I know it’s not cool to like Coldplay, but I’ve never really had a problem with them. I’ve not really listened to their later output, but the first two albums contain some good tracks. This is a set they did in Sydney in 2001 (not to be confused with the commercially released ‘Live 2003’ show recorded in the same city and released later). My memory is a bit hazy, but I think Kathy may have actually attended the show, this is a recording of Triple J’s broadcast of highlights from that gig. We start with Shiver which for me is one of their best songs. That’s followed by ‘Don’t Panic’, another one I’m quite fond of. The third track is ‘Spies’, which I don’t mind, but I can’t say it’s a favourite. Next we have ‘Everything is Not Lost’, not one I’m massively familiar with, but I quite enjoyed hearing it here. And that’s it. There are more songs, but they’re on another tape, so you’ll have to wait a while for those.

I can’t remember the last time I listed to this tape, so it was fun to go back and re-visit it, the Alex Lloyd show in particular.
